Digipak Research x2

Unfortunately I couldn't find any digipaks on Korean artists which was a shame because I been analyzing and writing a lot about them in my previous posts. However, the KPOP style is the most linked to the song I created to perform. So I researched some existing digipak designs of artist Beyonce and Eminem which are close to the genre of music I'm performing and found out the codes and conventions used in them. The first one I researched was Beyonce's greatest hits and the second one I researched was one of Eminem's regular digipak. The first thing I noticed straight away from both digipak covers is the close up shot of the artist. Eminem has an angry expression on his face and Beyonce's posture is very demonic-looking. In Eminem's digipak his face has been masked by pills, which could suggest that the concept is about rehabilitation. Whilst on the other hand Beyonce's differs because it has Beyonce wearing the outfits of some of her hit songs. Considering the fact that the album is based on her hits you can understand that the concept of her wearing the outfits worn in her hit songs, (that goes for the music videos and the live performances) would make general sense in this case. In the front cover of Eminem's digipak you can see a mental patient sticker type thing on the bottom left which in fact looks like it is linked to the Eminem pill face effect. Throughout the whole of the digipak it has a lot of splatters of pill pieces in simple black background. A really interesting thing they done with Beyonce's greatest hits is that the actual CD itself isn't no ordinary CD. They made the CD look like a vinyl record. I found that interesting because it is her greatest hits album so there had to be a unique selling point about it. With Eminem's digipak of "Relapse" they used the mental sticker to state the title of the album, artist name and the producer of the album. It was a very clever way to promote the album concept and the artist/producer.

Now as for the clothing of Beyonce in her greatest hits digipak you can see that she is wearing very little clothes that shows off her very curvy body. Some would say that she is wearing less clothes because it shows of her elegant side. I think that as an artist her greatest hits outfits don't look promising as a role model figure to many of the girls around ages of 18-24 who are statistically shown on yougov as her biggest fans. However, younger girls than the ages of 18-24 would be influenced by this more. It is true that statistically females of ages 18-24 are her biggest fans but because she is globally known and because of multimedia publication anyone capable of using technology can access her music or listen/visually see her on the music channels on television. Babies and kids are influenced really quick by things. So objectively looking at it Beyonce's outfits won't project a positive message. However, would look amazingly good to girls of ages 18-24 and maybe higher.

The next artist and digipak I will analysing is singer Katy B with On A Mission. The front and back cover of the digipak is very simplistic. On the front we have Katy B standing on the road with both her hands inside her jean pockets. Her facial expression tells us that she's just seen someone that she use to date.  Alongside this we have g
reenish overlays mixing in with the colour purple to give us a sense of artistic or abstract feel. Maybe it can even connote the different ways she views life? Maybe she has a secret life? The back cover is even more simple because it has one background colour with a few textures. We see the album cover name in the centre of the back as the foreground. The font is very broken and agent like. Underneath the main title we have other information about copyright etc. Again the background for the back cover is very minimalistic style probably to infer the street life.

The next artist is Chipmunk who goes by the name Chip now. The album cover consists of a close up shot of Chip with both of his hands together as if he was praying or hoping. We can already connote from this that he is the main attraction.
Chip is considered the 50 Cent of UK. People would
usually suspect him to be affiliated with gang related
activities. However, in this case he is looking like a hero.
Even though he still contains similar elements to 50 he
isn't attended to look like a bad boy in this particular album cover as a rapper.
The disk itself contains the same element to Katy B's it's very simple. It's literally the back cover of Katy B's On A Mission but on a black background disk. The same case for the back of the album cover it continues with the simplicity. Maybe it was done for the purpose of informing the target audience that he want to evolve the rap game?
